MANAGING in the

NEW WORLD

A tourism consulting assignment has been taken up by two of the ministries in France aiming to establish a thorough report on commercial activities within and around historic monuments. Stunningly the report captures that a mere 4% of all such monuments in the country are state-operated. The rest are all with either local authorities or privately-owned. This complex economic equation precipitates the need for long-term planning. A private firm – Caisse des Depots- that operates many such real estate projects is a key player within this scope along with its funding arm Bpi France. Six major business models have been identified which could leverage the existing cultural footprint in the country. These monuments though need to open up for more innovative tourism marketing activities.
