Experts believe that the country of Portugal is losing up to a million tourist arrivals each year thanks to its clogged main international airport in the capital city of Lisbon. According to business intelligence provided by the Confederation of Tourism in Portugal (CTPP), the Humberto Delgado Airport accounts for ninety percent of international tourist arrivals. At present its runway is clogged, so the authorities are planning a complementary runway in the same city at the Montijo airbase. There is a daily shortage of slots of plane taxiing. The inbound tourism to the country has increased significantly, leading to such demands on existing infrastructure. Between 2009 and 2017 alone, arrivals increased from a stable base of 36 million to a staggering 59 million. The Brexit decision in the UK may have some impacts on long term growth as the British are amongst the nationalities most traveling to Portugal. But otherwise the sector is set for expansion, so the requirement of new air terminals.
