MANAGING in the

NEW WORLD

A landmark case in the Czech Republic involving the hotel Brioni in the town of Ostrava has sent ripples across the tourism sector and otherwise in Europe. Two Russian tourists were made to condemn their country’s occupation of Crimea, and the hotel owner was let go off in the case. The reason cited was that tourism should be more than a business alone, but must allow the owner to dabble in one’s political philosophy. If this logic of collective guilt is applied, then someday a Turkish commoner could be denied entry in to Cyprus or a Chinese national due to the treatment of Tibet. Such politicization can adversely affect the generation of tourism jobs.
