MANAGING in the

NEW WORLD

Travel destinations around the world have been chasing the UNESCO Heritage City or Spot tag with fervor. Such tags bring enormous prestige and recognition followed by a massive upward movement in inbound tourist arrivals. However, they also bring with them problems associated with over-tourism. Countries and cities in Europe in particular have been plagued by such crippling disorders to city infrastructure. It has also affected the inner-city culture of cities, leading to “hands off UNESCO” placards being displayed at several places. On the positive side, business intelligence received puts tourism’s contribution to fourteen percent of Spain’s GDP, while France earns a whopping one-hundred and sixty billion euros each year from tourism. Venice alone receives ten million tourists on average each year. But some travel destinations have crossed beyond their sustainable limits. Examples of this are Dubrovnik in Croatia, Machu Pichu in Peru and Santorini in Greece. Venice and Barcelona have been most proactive in their anti-tourist displays.
