MANAGING in the

NEW WORLD

Chinese outbound tourist numbers have quadrupled globally over the last few years and so have their net spend on such trips. This should be a boon for Australia where Chinese tourists are the top overseas travel group. Yet instead of the natural optimism, Chinese tourists are shunning Australia and instead preferring colder destinations such as Russia or Switzerland. That is because as told to tourism consulting provider Bloomberg, majority of five star properties have an old look, with not much new investments. There is even a lack of four star properties in Sydney and Melbourne. Sydney still remains high on the radar thanks mainly to the Opera House and its iconic harbor, yet the future is uncertain. Australia encountered similar downturn during the 1980s and 1990s following the boom induced by the movie Crocodile Dundee.
