MANAGING in the

NEW WORLD

Google recently published a report on traits shared by its most successful teams. Right on top was the trait psychological safety, which implies the ability of team members to suggest ideas or disagree with others without fear of being castigated. Amy Edmonson, professor at leading MBA institute Harvard Business School feels that such fears are inbuilt among humans since time immemorial due to the tribal culture which existed where anybody significantly different to the others would get eliminated from the clan. Similarly, even at school level, people tend to toe the line in order to make friends. Of course even successful teams need to conform to certain norms, but these norms must never outweigh the ability to suggest and execute business innovations.
