There are certain character traits that the best of mentors tend to commonly possess. First of all, for them the relationship with their subjects is more important than the act of management training alone. The focus is not on the skills that their mentees tend to possess, but the attributes which will make an impact in the future. A thumb rule for the top mentors is not to reflect cynicism, but instead radiate optimism. The ultimate loyalty for such people lies with their mentees and not with the organization working for or with. In cases where they feel that their mentee and the company may not be the best of fit, this is clearly communicated.
