In a Distracted World, Solitude is a Competitive Advantage
An analysis the ex-CEO of Google suggests that the amount of content created every two years now in the digital age surpasses the entire body of work since the earliest days of civilization till 2013. The digital age has also forced each one of us to multi-task. Business research conducted by the University of London suggests that while multitasking, a person’s IQ drops by five to fifteen points. In such a scenario, it is imperative that we do not go by the herd-mentality and instead take time towards improving focus. In order to do so, some steps have been identified, the first of which is to build periods of complete solitude within the work schedule. A detailed analysis must be done on where this time is spent. A rectification of this will enable time to be allocated towards priorities. Distractions such as social media, YouTube or the internet must be starved off as far as possible. Constant learning must be built-in to develop techniques that will enable quicker execution of tasks. Finally, a “stop-doing” list must be prepared which will red flag one the moment the number of tasks executes the level where one remains calm and focussed.
