While companies spend fortunes on management training programmes specially attuned to develop leaders, a lot of such programmes have proved to be of scant benefit. This is because leadership is an art best honed through practice rather than in classroom sessions. Yet the very best of leaders squeeze some value out of most such sessions. This is because they are conscious of their actions and believe in mindful engagement. They exhibit a growth mindset and are forever in learning mode. For such leaders, there are three broad phases in the experiential learning cycle. At the first one, these leaders set challenging targets for themselves. At the next, the experiment with strategic choices. Once the experiment is done, these learners collect business intelligence from various sources to understand the impact.
