MANAGING in the

NEW WORLD

The numbers in the tourism sector in Turkey have been falling due to several factors that have raised anxieties. This includes waves of attacks and an attempted coup. However, one sub-sector within tourism is thriving. That is Halal tourism. This is a form that caters only to Muslim travelers. Turkey ranks fourth in the list just behind Malaysia, Indonesia and the UAE, according to numbers provided by the Global Muslim Travel Index. Tourism consulting provided by Thomson Reuters confirms that halal tourism will be worth US$ 283 billion by the year 2022, representing 14% of the overall global numbers. This form of tourism is also immune to economic cycles. Halal tourism consists of separate sex swimming pools, presence of the Koran in each room, arrows on the wall pointing towards Mecca, visits by an Imam each Friday and no alcohol being served within the premises.
