MANAGING in the

NEW WORLD

Sport tourism makes a significant contribution to the economy of Austria. While on average, sports contributes about two percent of the economy in most EU member states, in Austria, it is about twice that. The employment effect is even greater as significant numbers of people are engaged in sport tourism jobs. A lot of this is to do with the fact that Austria has in the past hosted the Winter Olympics and the World Ski Championships. Innsbruck in particular is still associated with that image, attracting a lot of winter travelers. Now Graz too wants to bid for the 2026 global event. Austria’s hosting of the Euro 2008 and neighbouring Germany’s successful hosting of the 2006 Football World Cup has further accentuated the positive image to do with sporting events for this region.
