What California’s new Gig Work Law gets wrong about Gig Work
The new law in California about gig work, titled AB5 sets the wrong tone when it comes to understanding this crucial segment. It crafts everything under either contractors or employees. This is going to majorly affect gig work platforms such as Task Rabbit, Uber, Airbnb, Craigslist, Turo, Up Work, Poshmark and Thumbtrack amongst others. The law is very much weighed in favour of employees, so most might just register themselves as that. This law also seeks to assert a sense of control between the suppliers and customers. This will have a massive impact on talent recruitment, as the law affects trucking, publishing, cleaning and rideshare companies. There will also be legal hassles around topics such as minimum wages, working hours or insurance.
