MANAGING in the

NEW WORLD

African countries Rwanda and Uganda are both known for one common tourism activity- gorilla trekking. Rwanda is nicknamed Land of a Thousand Hills while Uganda has earned the sobriquet Pearl of Africa. Tourism is a mainstay in these countries, which are only two of the three that are home to mountain gorillas. These apes share 98% DNA with humans. There is a ninety percent chance of spotting them, which is why gorilla trekking provides so many tourism jobs in these countries. But they also need to abide by strict rules to ensure conservation. The Ugandan Wildlife Authority (UWA) and the Rwandan Development Board (RWB) have strict rules for teams before the trek starts, during the hike and whenfinally in contact with the gorilla family.
