MANAGING in the

NEW WORLD

Increasingly, machines are being able to do things, humans haven’t yet managed to. Facial recognition of character traits for example is something where robots already seem well ahead of us as proven in the study on sexual orientation identification conducted by the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. While this study in itself maybe comparatively trivial, it has deep implications such as how far human behaviour could get tracked in the future, like in the film Minority Report. Algorithms are being developed to predict patterns on election results, honesty, success and political views. All this analysis is being done using personal aspects such as movement patterns, voice intonation and posture. The Chinese government has begun a pilot project in the city of Hangzhou where data warehousing is being done from various sources information about its citizens. The idea is to predict citizens’ violations on civil issues and also to decide who gets what kinds of benefits from authorities. Formal laws are being developed to protect citizens’ data infringement as by the European Union in its General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
