MANAGING in the

NEW WORLD

The city of Turkestan in Kazakhstan, is home to the Mausoleum of Ahmed Yassavi. It has long attracted pilgrims from far and wide, and is now proving to be a beacon for attracting other tourists as well. Several tourism jobs are being generated in this Central Asian country based around this monument. At one stage, this mausoleum built by the Great Tamerlane, had the reputation of being the second- most important pilgrimage spot for Muslims. It has also found a place on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. During several periods of restoration such as those in 1923 and then in 1994, lost artefacts were also rediscovered.
