Like many other major markets, Sri Lanka’s inbound tourism market too is getting dependent on Chinese arrivals. According to tourism consulting provided by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA), there has been an increase of over eighteen percent in overall tourist arrivals in the country but Chinese visitors have grown by over forty two percent. China is now the second largest source market of tourists for Sri Lanka, only behind India. Travelers from China and India together now make up around a third of total tourist arrivals. Other major source markets happen to be Germany, UK and France but Russian numbers hit a decline.

With the onslaught of online booking and digital marketing directly by hoteliers, travel agents have been losing business over the years. As per a tourism consulting report by Statistic Brain compiling data from several sources, nearly three-fifths of all travel reservations are now finalized and paid for online. In stark contrast lies the sub-industry of cruise travel where still two-thirds of bookings are made using travel agents. Thus an upcoming cruise convention in the Canadian city of Vancouver is set to be a boost to the tourism industry. One of the largest cruise shipping companies, Royal Caribbean Cruises has managed to increase capacity by thirty five percent which can only mean good news for the industry as a whole.
