MANAGING in the

NEW WORLD

A lot of people are genuinely in need of advice or inspiration. This is why millions tune in to inspirational talks, download such podcasts, hire personal coaches or attend specific management training exercises for the same. However, a lot of the effective wisdom transfer should ideally take place at work, but this is unfortunately not happening. One way to make this happen would be through mid-morning wisdom talks as done at the Zappos All-Hands setting. Each company must identify some “wisdom workers”, the kind whose experiences can help guide the others. This identification needs to be done by someone really good at talent management. A mutual mentoring programme needs to be developed intra-generation. Here millennials will coach Gen X-ers or Boomers and likewise there will be a role-reversal. Taking a cue from Airbnb, an Employee Resource Group (ERG) must be formed to focus on practical wisdom.
