The famous writer Isaac Asimov was interested in knowing how creativity and in turn, any business innovation idea gets churned. The same processes have been known to affect creativity positively across the industries. A bit of isolation is needed, according to Asimov. A relaxed atmosphere with a sense of permissiveness, helps in churning out such innovative ideas. A lot of ideas may be asymmetric, but ways need to be devised to get them together on board, towards a cohesive final strategy. There may also be sessions to ideate regarding innovations. A session arbiter needs to be present to ensure proceedings go along fine. Rare characteristics need to be found among individual, who are to be summoned for such ideation sessions.

There is a misconception that has spread like wildfire, is that creativity is the preserve of a select few only. The theory states that one needs to be born with a creative trait, or else there is no chance. But this is flawed. Instead, expertise is the reason behind creative solutions to be designed. The great scientist Albert Einstein for example, spent years studying Physics, before he was able to come up with his ground- breaking theories. There are several steps companies can take up to deliberately foster business innovations. One such way is by cultivating expertise, through deliberate assigning of challenging tasks. Another is to company- wide encourage exploration. The people need to be empowered through the use of technology. Pixar is an example of a company that is following this principle. Companies must also reward persistence among those trying to devise some solutions, just as IBM has so successfully done.

Creativity is essential for businesses, so when some new idea hits, it generates enormous fanfare, especially more so if the execution is successful. The best of creative minds though, need to understand when to turn themselves on and off. For this the first step is to understand the problem right, but then step back a little. This stepping back allows the unconscious mind to kick in, to make complete use of the experiences, creative connections and the mental resources. One needs to stay loyal to one’s curiosities, and explore event accordingly. Curiosity thus must never be killed. A method must be devised to keep a mental note or even a physical register for all ideas generated thus far. Sometimes, certain aspects must be undertaken which are not naturally attractive to the person concerned. This will stimulate new ideas, as a lot of these will be from areas outside one’s comfort. Similarly, some uncomfortable but brutally ruthful conversations needs to be brought in to the system. Once the idea hits, one needs to stop the thinking and get on with the execution, as not creativity will lead to any business innovation, unless the execution is swift and correct.

At any stage, creativity always wins. Even if algorithms can process business intelligence, much quicker now, it is humans who will decide what that data can be used for. That is why, several studies have suggested that for all the jobs that automation will displace, many more will get created. Another important facet is human- centric design using small data, which is nothing but deducing clues out of human behaviour.
