MANAGING in the

NEW WORLD

If one introspects on one’s own life, he/ she will definitely notice how carefree times were when younger. Children are willing to take far greater risks than adults are. Adults too need to bring in some of these qualities, by tapping in to their inner child. Each one of us has one. A quality most desired from childhood is being bold, especially critical while launching business innovations. The learning was also very fast, as there was little pre- built package. Children constantly experiment, so critical thinking gets built in to them. Children as also known for their resilience and flexibility in equal measure, qualities needed at the workplace, especially in leadership positions. Another quality is that children as trusting. They lack the cynicism and pessimism, that so often grips old- timers, but needs to be given up.

Several problems now plague the business world as well as society in general. The environment is one such, where plastic pollution threatens our oceans like never before. It has often been observed that in order to serve all stakeholders in society, the government makes plans making the use of management consulting firms. Unfortunately, it has often been observed that these consultants’ ideas only reimpose the ideas originally thought of by the government agencies themselves. Under such a situation, a utopian way of thinking has to be the way forward. This will lead to a Wise Power. Such wise leaders are less susceptible to insecurities. They’re able to execute innovations at faster pace, as they do not remain rigid to known systems. Utopia will reduce the effect of pessimism and cynicism so common to businesses.

Visionary leadership has been identified as one of the top traits that can lead a company to success. People’s view on this form of leadership though has been skewed by the word’s association with top leaders such as Walt Disney, Oprah Winfrey and Steve Jobs. That is the reason, that visionary leadership tends to be seen as a top management task. Instead alignment with corporate strategy has also been in reality come to be associated with the middle- level of management. Indeed, it was highlighted by the Project Oxygen by Google as among the most desirable traits at that stage. The reason for the frequent failure of visionary leadership is the fact that it is often not backed at the middle level. Thus, the proper alignment is needed between the strategy and the middle- management level.

Being a CEO actually goes a long way in explaining the cliché- lonely at the top. A CEO’s job is so stressful, he/ she often becomes addicted to alcohol or other such measures. A CEO often becomes the target for envious or even outright hostile feelings. Its like living in an echo chamber, because whatever one says, bounces back, even after taking utmost precaution. CEOs are often characterized by a sense of paranoia gripping them. To prepare against such situations, a CEO needs to be mentally prepared for the worst. An external network of support needs to be built. A very good practice for talent management is to express gratitude towards whoever has contributed at any time towards the good of the company. This helps in curating of positive emotions, so good experiences may be relished.
