The human brain has two broad divisions. One is the pre- frontal cortex, while the other is the amygdala. People whose dominant side revolves around the former, tend to be reactive and impulsive. Those where the latter dominates, are much more thoughtful, and their actions deliberate. It is the latter type, who tend to be far more successful as global business leaders. This is because they can concentrate on the bigger picture, working on aspects outlined in the corporate strategy document, rather than micro- manage, and work on the nitty- gritty. One needs to avoid the inner lawyer that tends to delay or provide excuses for tasks not completed. These two selves outlined, need to be played out against each other, by the individual, to strike the right balance.

There are some behavioral traits that set apart the most successful of CEOs. One of them is their efficiency at decision- making. It is always done with speed, but also with utmost conviction. It is also essential for the best of CEOs to understand, when not to take any decision or delay the same. Their engagements with people around, are impactful. For this, they take utmost care to avoid any case of emotional contagion. These leaders are also adept at adapting. This is especially a critical trait now due to the speed of disruption all around. Beyond this, they are also good at delivering results, consistently. To do this, they need to ensure that realistic targets have been set. A sound corporate strategy is needed, before jumping headlong in to execution, which many CEOs have the tendency to do.

In order to avoid getting trapped in to the net of poor leadership decisions, every leader needs to develop an early warning system of sorts. For this, one needs to be able to spot own unforced errors. These are those errors where no one else was involves, or influenced, but purely of one’s own doing. The leader will also need to explore one’s prone zone. It is best to be honest with oneself. So, the leader must acknowledge, cost of his/ her own mistakes. The unforced errors identified, now need to be diagnosed against the risks involved. One can’t be too safe either, as business innovations will then never hit the stride. These could be divided as per indicators. The indicators may be related to time, energy levels, resources available or the intensity of focus.
