Companies and especially business leaders must develop a management training programme that specifically explores the creation of a future management pipeline. This requires a customized plan designed for not more than a handful of perhaps ten future leaders. Strategic thinking can be built into employees but they need to experiment with it. Roundtable discussions may be held with these future leaders who will study and provide inputs on corporate strategy. Each strategic choice must be broken down into five components- what business one is in, how value may be added to it, target customers, value proposition and unique capabilities competitors lack. An annual strategy forum must also be held with the CEO. Once such discussions take place, employees will naturally start getting wired to strategic thinking.
