MANAGING in the

NEW WORLD

There is a lot of talk these days on the work- life balance. However, a lot of this discussion is pointless, as these aren’t two opposing poles, as is usually presented. Rather, one brings his/ her entire self to the workplace. Thus, instead of balance, talent management professionals must seek to provide a work- life integration. This is when both work seamlessly together. There will be a lot of challenges along the way. It isn’t merely easy simply ticking off some boxes. One needs to work out the intersection between the career goals and the person’s life goals. A lot of things people work on beyond the workplace, need not be hidden from view.

The fields of wealth management and risk management have both been duly affected by the emergence of platforms such as Tolerisk, Riskalyze and Fina Metrica. Companies are now conducting intense analysis on how people react to risks. One such method is called personality profiling, based around the individual traits and preferences. This helps improve decision making and fosters collaboration. Another process is psychological consultancy, which is being used a lot in talent management. It measures several points in a person’s trajectory including social, ethical, financial health and career considerations. There is also the Cambridge Code, which is about assessing personalities more broadly. Risk- related behavior tools also help team leaders in conferring to themselves a sense of control.

A study conducted in the year 2017 by marketing research firm Gallup, clearly indicated that just over half of those surveyed, were looking for fresh employment opportunities. More than actual newer jobs, many want more flexible work hours, better vacation policies, tele- work and compressed work weeks. A similar conclusion was reached in 2019 when the Met Life Employee Benefits Trend Study was published. Talent management professionals need to scrutinize such studies more carefully. Better scheduling helps all, as has been proven at retail outlets such as at Mercadona and Costco. Productivity is enhanced, while employees are happier, leading to reduced absenteeism, and more balance to the staff turnover rates. Flexibility is often a stigma for traditional employers, who view it as too much of employee power. Before trying to shift schedules, one needs to shift the mindsets.

Beyond the overarching larger aspects much talked of, there exist some crucial little things that can make or break work relationships. Some guiding principles need to be adopted to ensure the right balance in these relations. For a start, a professional must try to understand his/ her coworker’s viewpoints. One must also understand that any micro moves made by a worker, need not always be intentional. Each employee must thoroughly understand one’s role in the bigger framework. The talent management procedures established must focus on the role, story, specific moves and the situation of the individual. One’s own micro moves need to be carefully documented. The micro moves created aren’t all equal, whether ‘good’ or ‘bad’.

A lot of professionals in today’s knowledge economy, are growing weary of the old maxim on working hard before observing the results. They feel cut off from the company performance, so fail to assert a link with their own work. Smart work has thus gained greater credence now. One area where the old adage still works, is the gym. People actually enjoy the process as well. Thus, a new generation of leaders, aware of this paradigm, is working to run their organizations like a gym. The talent management credentials of fitness leadership, focuses more on camaraderie and justice. A lot of immersive taking is now taking place from the sports culture. Sports hours and fitness tests are part of such organizations’ appeal. There is little peer- reviewed evidence that this will work, but as of now, the new breed is happy implementing the same.

While most professionals nowadays seem adept at social media, not too many are making the best use of the professional networking and talent recruitment platform- LinkedIn. However, a recent study has claimed that creativity can be much boosted by interacting with newer people on the said platform. Online Social Connectivity (OSC) and the related Online Social Knowledge Management (OSKM) are two related ingredients necessary for today’s professionals. Newer ideas emerge when interacting with these new friends on LinkedIn. A number of companies profess a code of conduct for employees to abide by on social media, especially during work hours. But more than this, what matters is the example set by their seniors.

The new law in California about gig work, titled AB5 sets the wrong tone when it comes to understanding this crucial segment. It crafts everything under either contractors or employees. This is going to majorly affect gig work platforms such as Task Rabbit, Uber, Airbnb, Craigslist, Turo, Up Work, Poshmark and Thumbtrack amongst others. The law is very much weighed in favour of employees, so most might just register themselves as that. This law also seeks to assert a sense of control between the suppliers and customers. This will have a massive impact on talent recruitment, as the law affects trucking, publishing, cleaning and rideshare companies. There will also be legal hassles around topics such as minimum wages, working hours or insurance.
