There are over fifteen hundred volcanoes worldwide, posing a massive threat to life and air travel. Countries as far apart as Iceland, Italy and Indonesia have been severely impacted by them. Some form of responsible volcanic tourism is important so that people understand what actually goes on in them, but reckless behaviour can lead to massive repercussions. Volcano trekking needs to be taken with a lot of care. This business innovation by several travel operators is bringing in the moolah, especially in South and Central America. Google is planning to expand its footprints in the travel industry. It plans to be the final one- stop solution where all travel- related services can be worked out. Its latest business innovation allows travelers to rent apartments. For this, it has tied up with the likes of Expedia, VRBO, Home away, Trip Advisor, Redawning and with hotels.com. As per this arrangement, entire houses too may be rented. One city that has already been entered in it is Amsterdam. Airbnb already occupies a substantial portion of the traveler segment thanks to its no- frills set up. Google had worked on vacation rentals earlier, but there were fewer opportunities back then in 2017.

Due to the proliferation of Airbnb’s business model, the hotel industry is in for further swings in trends. One of them is the fact that luxury hotels will get smaller in size but will be even more expensive. This is because the middle segment will almost disappear, yielding instead to the Airbnb style brands. The luxury hotel segment will need to respond by introducing further business innovations to remain relevant for the top- end. So, luxurious facilities will need to provided in the future plus unique offerings. The middle segment will also up the ante in terms of facilities, without disturbing the price bracket. This, it will manage by reducing staff costs.

Sport tourism makes a significant contribution to the economy of Austria. While on average, sports contributes about two percent of the economy in most EU member states, in Austria, it is about twice that. The employment effect is even greater as significant numbers of people are engaged in sport tourism jobs. A lot of this is to do with the fact that Austria has in the past hosted the Winter Olympics and the World Ski Championships. Innsbruck in particular is still associated with that image, attracting a lot of winter travelers. Now Graz too wants to bid for the 2026 global event. Austria’s hosting of the Euro 2008 and neighbouring Germany’s successful hosting of the 2006 Football World Cup has further accentuated the positive image to do with sporting events for this region.
