Ethiopia is rising as a tourism destination, but this growth could soon be punctured thanks to growing political uncertainty. Recently riots were experienced in the eastern part of the country along the Somali border. In spite of this, revenues have been rising, as have inbound tourist numbers. Last year, the number nearly reached the magic one million mark. Ethiopia is still far off Morocco as a favored tourist destination in Africa. But there is massive potential thanks to the business innovation which is trying to leverage attractions such as the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, the Simien National Park and the lower part of Omo valley, all of which as listed among the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Medical tourism is growing at a brisk pace especially in some countries. Different countries specialize in varied aspects of the same. Barbados, Hungary, Mexico and Thailand are all renowned for certain niche areas. But as per statistics provided by the International Medical Travel Journal (IMTJ), the USA ranks first in the world in terms of inbound medical travelers. South Korea follows on rank two, further trailed by Turkey, Thailand and Germany completing the top five. The total value of this industry has been pegged by the research firm- Allied Market Research at US$ 61 billion. An increasing number of middle-class patients are traveling to Asia go get their medical treatments done. Reliable data is not always easy to avail because of different countries treating the definition of medical travel with separate components. The UK for example also includes data for spa visits here, which many others do not as that is more part of wellness rather than medical care.

Morocco is a country trying to diversify its economy through the use of business tourism. Yet, as of now the footfalls are very less. Business tourism makes up only 4.4% of the total tourism revenues in the country as per business intelligence gathered from the foreign exchange office of Morocco. There is a severe lack of infrastructure to this end, with only the convention centre in Marrakech that can hold a mere three-thousand visitors. All this is ultimately tied up to the fact that Morocco isn’t yet an industrial power, though it is poised to be one, especially in the automotive sector. French carmakers Peugeot and Renault have set up manufacturing facilities. To ensure them thriving, the government will need to develop better roadways and logistics network. This will also bring benefits to business tourism.

Drunkenness has long been a problem in some European countries, especially along its north-east. The three Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania as well as neighbors Poland and Finland have long been known for its high-levels of alcohol consumption. In pure alcohol terms, Lithuania stands right on top in the entire world while Estonia and Latvia are on 11th and 14th places respectively. And this for a region with a combined population less than Austria. To tackle this issue, the government of Finland imposed heavy taxes, making alcohol consumption a near luxury there. Estonia and Lithuania followed suit. But as a result of this, instead of curbing consumption, it has led to increased alco-tourism to neighbouring Latvia and Poland, where it still remains dirt cheap. Business innovations have sprung up where residents of Finland, Lithuania and Estonia are specially driving down to Poland and Latvia to take advantage of the cheaper alcohol. This model may not last long though as the next revision of excise rates will be in March 2019 in Latvia.Source:

Due to the continuously ongoing conflicts in the broader region, Jordan has seen its tourism industry dwindle in force. However, lately there have been embers of hope with 2017 seeing an upturn of 15% in inbound tourist numbers and 18% rise in revenues as per information corroborated by the Minister of Tourism and Antiquities. Ambitions however do not quell here with hopes rising that this figure could go up to 7 million tourists in 2020, up from the 4.2 million achieved last year. Jordan is offering special packages for its Biblical sites focusing on archaeology, culture and adventure. Private accommodation through online platforms are also getting a fillip. With the unemployment rate reaching a staggering 17.8% in 2017, there is hope that the generation of tourism jobs will quell these fears of economic meltdown.

The country has also hosted hallmark events in the recent past such as the Football World Cup and the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. But it seems to no avail. The sector is struggling. Overall, the sector has grown over the past decade generating numerous travel jobs, but the struggle has been on for the past three now. There has been a revenues loss exceeded 150 billion Brazilian Reals. Further, the Economic Division of the CNC informs that the sector will only retreat by 4% this year. The recovery will only truly take place from 2020 onwards. Rio de Janeiro experienced the maximum decline followed by Rio Grande do Sul and Sao Paolo.
