MANAGING in the

Climate change seems to have trapped its latest victim and it is Florida. The tourism sector in particular across the state is set to be heavily affected due to rising water levels. This is caused by the melting of polar icecaps as a result of warmer temperatures worldwide. Florida will be the worst hit state in the US due to it being the flattest in terms of altitude. All the big tourist hubs of the state such as Miami, Palm Beach, Tampa and Florida Keys will feel the heat. Tourism consulting provided by the UCS (Union of Concerned Scientists) warns that more than sixty-thousand homes are under fear of getting trapped in this flood. That would mean a loss of US$ 120 billion by 2045. The report further adds that 85% of those properties under threat could be saved if the provisions of the Paris Agreement are followed. Unfortunately, USA has walked out of the deal.

The numbers in the tourism sector in Turkey have been falling due to several factors that have raised anxieties. This includes waves of attacks and an attempted coup. However, one sub-sector within tourism is thriving. That is Halal tourism. This is a form that caters only to Muslim travelers. Turkey ranks fourth in the list just behind Malaysia, Indonesia and the UAE, according to numbers provided by the Global Muslim Travel Index. Tourism consulting provided by Thomson Reuters confirms that halal tourism will be worth US$ 283 billion by the year 2022, representing 14% of the overall global numbers. This form of tourism is also immune to economic cycles. Halal tourism consists of separate sex swimming pools, presence of the Koran in each room, arrows on the wall pointing towards Mecca, visits by an Imam each Friday and no alcohol being served within the premises.

Ukraine was a country with a steady supply of tourists till the year 2014 when the Crimean crisis hit. AT its peak, inbound arrivals numbered in excess of 24 million. This came crashing down to about half the figure in a single year. While it has been improving, certain setbacks are not helping. One such is the treatment that several foreign arrivals are experiencing in the country. Liverpool football club fans for example when beaten up by masked vigilantes. There was a high-ranking official in the US embassy who faced similar assault. The case with illegal prostitutes is another dark mark with several foreign tourists using them, only to be cheated or looted then. In a stagnating economy tourism is one area of respite as it has been generating travel jobs for a while now. So, this abuse of foreign travelers has to be dealt with strongly.

According to business intelligence provided by the Confederation of Tourism in Portugal (CTPP), the Humberto Delgado Airport accounts for ninety percent of international tourist arrivals. At present its runway is clogged, so the authorities are planning a complementary runway in the same city at the Montijo airbase. There is a daily shortage of slots of plane taxiing. The inbound tourism to the country has increased significantly, leading to such demands on existing infrastructure. Between 2009 and 2017 alone, arrivals increased from a stable base of 36 million to a staggering 59 million. Appearing poor may not necessarily consign one to poverty. This is because the living standards vary across countries depending on local expenses and living standards. It is essential for tourists from western developed economies to maintain a sense of respect towards material possessions while in developing ones. So, they are often advised by tour operators not to bargain too much, flaunt their wealth or give sundry alms to beggars. The treatment of beggars is a matter of concern so tour operators often advise their clients to refrain from giving alms especially to kids as this will lead to the development of a vicious circle. One key business innovation which has faced this challenge has been slum tourism. A lot of tourists remain in dilemma whether to view slums from the comfort of their vehicles or to walk along. The latter is usually preferred as it gives them a window to the real lives. One must also remain ethical in use of water or toiletries depending on the local needs.
