The most popular destinations remain London, Berlin, Madrid, Paris and Amsterdam. Business intelligence received puts the rise in overnight stays by 3.4%. A lot of cities such as Amsterdam, Berlin, Ibiza and Barcelona have taken steps to restrict the activities of Airbnb. Mass tourism can never be a bad thing, in revenue terms at least. In Spain, tourism accounts for more than a tenth of the country’s GDP. Yet criticism is mounting for tourism, especially in some cities such as Barcelona which are seeing massive anti-tourist movements. This is primarily due to faulty planning on the part of the authorities, rather than tourism itself. The greatest opposition is due to the rises in prices of common commodities as a result of tourists’ higher purchasing power. But Barcelona will be well-advised to heed to Paris’s case. The latter receives more tourists each year than the former but stays clear of any such criticism. Business intelligence received suggests that Paris actually attracts a whopping eighteen million tourists each year. But due to the city’s superior planning and management, there are no palpable tensions with the local communities.Source:

While tourism is one of the mainstays of life in the Caribbean region, hurricanes have frequently disrupted this way of life and the corresponding business. Puerto Rico in particular has been very badly affected, as once for months half the population had to survive without electricity. In Antigua and Barbuda, Hurricane Irma affected business u up to US$ 300 billion as per what the country’s president informed the Time magazine. According to marketing research conducted by Virtuoso, about a fourth of their clients have shifted their travel plans away from the Caribbean or Florida. Hawaii, Mexico, California and South American have been the major gainers instead. The real estate market in Miami is also set to be hit as a majority of new home-buyers in the city from 2009 to 2013 were from the Caribbean. This number is set to reduce due to the financial disruptions back home for them.

African countries Rwanda and Uganda are both known for one common tourism activity- gorilla trekking. Rwanda is nicknamed Land of a Thousand Hills while Uganda has earned the sobriquet Pearl of Africa. Tourism is a mainstay in these countries, which are only two of the three that are home to mountain gorillas. These apes share 98% DNA with humans. There is a ninety percent chance of spotting them, which is why gorilla trekking provides so many tourism jobs in these countries. But they also need to abide by strict rules to ensure conservation. The Ugandan Wildlife Authority (UWA) and the Rwandan Development Board (RWB) have strict rules for teams before the trek starts, during the hike and whenfinally in contact with the gorilla family.

The spread of bitcoins and other cryptocurrencies has fueled a massive interest in the engine that actually powers such technologies- Blockchain. While it is already a feature at several finance-based companies, the tourism sector is also experimenting with ways to get in. In Spain a blockchain startup Amadeus has highlighted over a white paper, four possible uses for blockchain in tourism. Customer loyalty programmes can get optimized using the business intelligence blockchain will generate. Real-time baggage-tracking, identity process during travel, and tourism contracting are some of the end-results envisaged. In order to win its war against room and reservation aggregators such as Booking or Hotels.com, Airbnb has added a new feather to its cap. Airbnb has tied up with French IT firm Avail pro to leverage the latter’s enormous reach of over ten-thousand boutique hotels across Asia and Europe. Reservations and prices will thus get synchronized using a common algorithm. Earlier this year, Airbnb had signed an agreement with management and distribution group Site Minder. This business innovation will provide Airbnb with access to about twenty-eight thousand hotels worldwide with whom Site Minder works directly with. Airbnb has even invited small, family-run hotels to tie-up with this initiative. They have very strictquality requirements though, so not all will be instantly accepted.
