MANAGING in the

NEW WORLD

Tourism is a massive money-spinner in several parts of the world. This is both in terms of direct generation of travel jobs as well as those ancillary industries dependent on tourist arrivals. A case in point is Spain where more than three million people are employed in this industry generating a total of sixty-four billion euros to the economy each year. The leisure part of tourism in particular is a key ingredient. While hotels and bars are well known parts of that ecosystem, casinos too play a very important role. Las Vegas, to cite an example, is a city almost entirely dependent for its tourism proceeds on the gambling industry. While more than forty million people visited Las Vegas in 2017, casinos need to up their ante to ensure they do not get literally robbed off by other tourist ventures. Online gambling too is a huge challenge. Some casinos have resorted to displaying their fame and history as notable landmarks, thus ensuring business. Many leverage the holiday season aspect, knowing that a risky vocation like gambling, people will be most comfortable indulging on, while on holiday. A lot have even added free money just to induce the customers to start off. Some put on a display involving fireworks and stars to attract them customers.

Travel destinations around the world have been chasing the UNESCO Heritage City or Spot tag with fervor. Such tags bring enormous prestige and recognition followed by a massive upward movement in inbound tourist arrivals. However, they also bring with them problems associated with over-tourism. Countries and cities in Europe in particular have been plagued by such crippling disorders to city infrastructure. It has also affected the inner-city culture of cities, leading to “hands off UNESCO” placards being displayed at several places. On the positive side, business intelligence received puts tourism’s contribution to fourteen percent of Spain’s GDP, while France earns a whopping one-hundred and sixty billion euros each year from tourism. Venice alone receives ten million tourists on average each year. But some travel destinations have crossed beyond their sustainable limits. Examples of this are Dubrovnik in Croatia, Machu Pichu in Peru and Santorini in Greece. Venice and Barcelona have been most proactive in their anti-tourist displays.

An online travel agency e-Dreams has recently concluded a marketing research assignment to understand how music plays a key role in choosing holiday destinations. This is especially important for young travelers between the ages of twenty and thirty-nine as a little over a fourth have confirmed that they choose their next destinations based on their choice of music. A lot of people travel for their favourite music shows such as at Lollapalooza, Coachella or Glastonbury. Portuguese travelers are the most ardent followers of their favourite artistes with two-fifths of them ready to go the length just to follow them. Spanish, German and French travelers are next in line. Americans and Italians most look forward to traveling for music fests. Among music genres, Americans most prefer Jazz, while Swedes do country music. Portuguese travelers are most fond of Brazil’s samba and Germans reggae. The millennial generation has followed and made others believe that traveling is the only way to lead a life fulfilled. It is apparently the answer to complicated relationships, as exemplified across movies catering to this generation. Millennials apparently value experiences over material possessions. Yet, with time even these backpacking joints and youth hostels have become standardized across the planet. While the digital nomad was supposed to be the envy of regular office-goers, now this kind of a profile too has become commonplace. Digital marketing teams have leveraged these individuals to be influencers for various travel and hospitality brands. Reports even suggest that tourism is today responsible for a tenth of the world’s pollution.

The hotel of the future will be drastically different to the one at present, if we go by what respondents at a recent survey want. Marketing research was conducted by Bitkom to gauge customers’ views on innovations that the hotel industry needs to get going. Automatic check-ins using robots was one drastic suggestion. A common thread is the availability of favorite snacks in the room just prior to arrival. Many want a taxi to be ordered automatically to the airport whenever the flight gets delayed. Travelers also wish to do more of the same without moving an inch using Virtual Reality (VR) platforms. This is especially true for the sixteen to twenty-nine age-bracket.
