As gory as it sounds, nuclear tourism is on the rise. Its enthusiasts are now flocking over in large numbers to Chernobyl in Ukraine, to witness the site of the worst nuclear accident in history that happened in 1986. This trend has generated numerous tourism jobs in the region with tour guides taking great effort in assuring visitors of the safety at such visits. Ukrainian travel agencies are offering stays as close by as possible, across different price ranges. Visitor numbers have been propelled up to fifty-thousand in 2017, up by three-hundred and fifty percent from 2012. Such tourism initiatives are being criticized among some quarters such as the parliament in Germany. But one positive all notice is the eventual power of nature as a lot of old asphalt roads have been taken over by wild grasses. Especially poignant is the abandoned town of Pripyat.

Traveling is a joy for many, but also part of work for some. Frequent travelers are exposed to new cultures, and have the freedom to enjoy new cuisines, but also encounter a flipside. It leads to certain health disorders caused by continuously falling out of routine. This is especially true for international travel where the body gets exposed to different time zones. Some tips have been provided to ensure that frequent travelers do not miss out on a healthy lifestyle. Firstly, travel insurance is a must. One must ensure to wash hands regularly, as a lot of common travel terminals being most frequented tend to be amongst the dirtiest. While it is an essential part of travel, to try out new cuisines, one must try to go more on lean proteins, fruits, vegetables, whole grains and plenty of water. Excess carbs need to be avoided as that can lead to travel fatigue. One must work towards getting adequate sleep. One could make use of business innovations such as travel pillows or noise-cancelling headphones to this effect. Time must also be dedicated during the travel for relaxation.

A book released recently titled Anti-tourism Manual written by famous sociologist Rodolphe Christin argues against any form of tourism. He feel that tourism itself and all tourist ought to be banned, including the considerably ethical ones. While tourism claims to promote culture, it lumps too many together, thus destroying a lot of micro ones. The history of tourism started about a century back in western European countries which are now the largest source markets for international travelers as well as top inbound tour markets. Christin further adds that since less than four percent of the world’s population has engaged in any tourism activity ever, thus it is highly exclusivist and a rich people’s club. Thus, while there are a good number of travel jobs, the revenues ultimately benefit only a few developed countries. He instead advocates for people to become travelers. This includes slow, leisurely activities which help in discovering oneself. Beyond travel or tourism, such ideas can also be inculcated into daily life, such as cycling to office.

Tourism is one of the most significant industries in Egypt bringing substantial amounts of foreign exchange. The inbound arrivals have reduced since the 2011 uprising against the then-president Hosni Mubarak, though signs of recovery have been witnessed in the last two years. Prior to the revolution, the number of inbound arrivals were pegged at about fifteen million. Tourism jobs were then aplenty. Now, the minister of tourism in Egypt wants to diversify the tourism offerings in order to expand on the so-far recovering base. She wants something for all categories of tourists, be they leisure, package, backpacker or a culture connoisseur. One key project to increase this windfall is expected to be the development of the town of El-Alamein, which is near Alexandria. Investments are also being sought for projects around Cairo and the Suez Canal.

An increasing number of people want to travel with their pets tagging along. So, there is a massive demand for hotels and tourist lodges that allow pets especially cats and dogs. Business intelligence provided by Traber, revealed that about 7.4% of online room searches included a check on the pet policies at the hotel. For such travelers, Europe is a dream destination, especially some countries. Germany tops the chart with pet-friendly hotels and three of the other four in the top five are from Europe, namely- Italy, France and Austria. Canada is the exception. Among big cities too, it is Berlin that tops the charts. South America performs fairly poor with Chile and Peru’s establishments being in the single digits of pet acceptance. Usually coastal cities fare better in this than do inland or downtown ones.

The European tourism sector uniquely for seven years consecutive has outgrown the overall global growth in GDP terms. This is set to continue with the growth forecast looking good at just short of four percent for the next decade. Challenges remain such as terror threats, weather disasters, currency fluctuations and an uncertain political environment. Classic travel destinations such as London, Berlin, Paris and Amsterdam are doing solid business. Business intelligence received puts the growth in inbound travel to the UK at eight percent. The growth has partly been simulated due to the Brexit decision which lead to the fall of the Pound. Another growth engine has been the autonomous region of Portugal known as the Azores Islands. This has been possible due to direct flight connections with USA, UK, Spain, Germany and of course Portugal. According to an online travel company e-Dreams, some new destinations have sprung up as places of choice for Europeans to visit. This includes countries such as Cuba, India, Singapore, South Africa, Australia, Colombia and the Dominican Republic.
