Black Friday comes to the Tourism Sector
Black Friday has traditionally been one of the most important periods for shopping and business in North America, but its influence is now also hitting off Europe. This is especially true for the tourism and aviation industries. Melia, Sercotel and Vincci are three of Europe’s hotel chains that have offered substantial discounts to leverage the entire Cyber week. Among airlines, Iberia Express, Ryanair, Easy-jet and Air France- KLM have been among those to jump in to the queue. Even LATAM has joined in the fray with attractive offers to fly to-and-fro countries such as Ecuador, Peru and Chile. E-booking platforms are using the entire week’s festivities to take forward their digital marketing efforts. This includes the likes of Carrefour, Viajes El Corte Ingles and Destinia.

Shopping Tourism is the Gold mine for Italian Cities
Shopping tourism is fast emerging as one of the major arteries for the travel industry in Italy. As per business intelligence shared by the Shopping Tourism Italian Monitor, the most visited cities for this purpose in Italy are- Milan, Florence, Rome, Turin and Venice. The percentage of share ranks highest at Milan which is in fact the number one destination in the world for shopping tourism followed by New York City, London and Paris. The Milan Fashion Week receives maximum citations. It is notably increasing in popularity and awareness among Russian travellers. On average, a shopping tourist spends one-hundred and ten Euros a day. The majority of this is spent on clothes, followed by accessories such as leather goods. Cosmetics and perfumes ranks third. Greater focus still needs to be paid on the “made in Italy” tag. Also, relations need be improved between the shopping villages and city centres.

Mexican town threatened by Tourism
Similar to the fallout in Europe, now a town on the other side of the Atlantic in Mexico has also revolted against the excesses of the tourist trade. Barcelona, Athens, Venice and Palma de Mallorca have all made efforts to save the local culture, heritage and environment from mass tourism’ debilitating effects. So now this Mexican town of Real de Catorce has taken similar steps as the local pollution levels have gone up tremendously. The city used to be at the heart of a silver mining industry, before most of the ore got depleted. Now tourism is the main industry, with hotel rooms spiralling up six times within just a few years. The total tourist intake stands at more than a million. The local authorities do not yet want to curb the industry, as tourism jobs make up a significant chunk of the economy. Instead they want a more balanced approach so that the rich cultural heritage of the town maybe preserved.

Russian Outbound Tourism returns to pre-crisis Level
Outbound travel from Russia has rebounded after the offsets over the last two years. It had been declining since the high of 2014 with reductions of nineteen and nine percent respectively in 2015 and 2016. Another interesting piece of data as revealed by the Federal State Statistics Service is that outbound tourism to Turkey has been restored which suffered after the crisis in 2014. According to business intelligence provided by the Association of Tour Operators of Russia (ATOR), other popular destinations include Bulgaria, Greece, Spain and Cyprus. Among these Cyprus is the most expensive with Bulgaria being the cheapest. Regular flights to Egypt have also been restored. Less than a third of Russians happen to possess passports, which is why a significant increase in travel has been the domestic market.
