The government of Senegal wants the country to be amongst the top five destinations in Africa for inbound tourism by the year 2023. For this several steps are being taken. At present, tourism makes up a tenth of the country’s GDP, while nine percent of all employment is in tourism jobs. The rate of growth has also been impressive, clocking at around seven percent. The new Museum of Black Civilizations, opened in the capital of Dakar, has been a major hit, as have the Monument of the African Renaissance and the megalitihic circles in the south of the country in Senegambia. Tourism consulting firm Horwath HTL has been making the right noises on how Senegal is poised for substantial growth in the sector. A diversified offering needs to be established better to achieve the same.

While the world of tourism has seen several business innovations that have challenged the existing models, and crated new revenue streams, there have also been a fair share of disasters. One such were the World Islands, developed on the Persian Gulf off Dubai. Its misfortune was the financial crisis of 2008 which put an end to this project’s hopes of success. Another is the new airport in Berlin, set initially for its inauguration in 2011, but constantly put back. Its latest date has been set for 2021. Yet another is the New South China Mall in Dongguan, which has been a huge loss in terms of land wastage. The Estadio Nacional de Brasilia met a similar fate after being opened up for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, but with little use post the mega event. The last on the list, is the Harmon Hotel in Las Vegas. This was such a failure, that in 2013, it was decided to completely demolish the structure.

The Mexican Caribbean region is beset with a unique problem. The region has been inundated with a outgrowing of the dreaded Sargassum weed. This could hamper tourism in this region. To cope with this, hotels here will provide a discount of between fifteen and twenty percent to the customers. This has been mentioned by the President of the Confederation of National Chambers of Commerce, Services and Tourism. The Sargassum seaweed is invasive, leading to destruction of native habitat here, besides a potential loss in tourism jobs. The region expects a total of nearly seventy million tourists during the holiday season from July to August. While majority of these tourists would be domestic, substantial numbers of inbound travelers also arrive from Canada, USA and from Europe.

The tourism authorities in Canada have come out with highly innovative and inclusive business models to cater to all segments of travellers. This includes Aboriginal, Culinary and LGBT versions. However, one area that ought to be explored, and much ignored as of now, is Francophone tourism. Whatever exists of this form, can only be observed within the boundaries of the French- speaking state of Quebec. French is spoken by around two- hundred and seventy million people around the world, so this presents a massive opportunity to Canada, well beyond Quebec alone. As per a report by the Economic Counseil, the non- Quebec contribution to Francophone Tourism stood at nearly eight billion dollars in 2016. This accounts for over one- hundred and twenty thousand direct tourism jobs. Experts suggest, that countrywide the policy of having two official languages needs to be adopted.
