MANAGING in the

NEW WORLD

There is much demand for digital talent among tourism jobs. This is because of several specific skills that are now being hunted for during the rounds of talent recruitment. This includes skills in affiliate marketing, social media, content creation, CRM management and more. Data scientists are increasingly being searched for by travel companies. Technology would be able to create further employment opportunities in tourism over the next ten to fifteen years. Some top chains already making much use of such newer technologies include the likes of Accor, Marriott International and Melia Hotels. Such predictive technologies help anticipating changes, so that opportunities maybe planned for.

Think Sustainably is a new online service that the local authorities have started to track such progress. There are seventeen principles in total, as part of this, divided in to four key thematic areas. These are in food and drink, social sustainability, energy and in others. Think Sustainably, being an online service, will also partake in its own digital marketing, though of a different kind. It will promote sustainable tourism forms and publish information on the basic of such development.

A tourism consulting assignment undertaken by You Gov has come up with some interesting observations. The idea was to uncover nationals of which country are the most welcome abroad. The Japanese come right on top. This is consistent across markets such as Spain, France, Great Britain and Finland. Scandinavian travelers scored well in other countries, part of their region. Surprisingly, German travelers don’t have that good a reputation, even in Spain where they flock to, in large numbers. Nationals from Germany and the UK are also most critical of their own behaviours, while those from Denmark, Spain and Italy have the most positive image of themselves. On the other side of the scale, Chinese travelers are most unpopular in South- East Asia.

Something which until recently, was considered purely the preserve of science fiction books and cinema, may soon become reality. A project titled as the Von Braun Station is set to be concluded by the year 2025, when the first ever space hotel will orbit around the earth’s atmosphere. The concept of design thinking has become embedded as part of the scheme, with the team eager for the interiors to be aesthetic, so humans can connect to the place. Behind this project is the Gateway Foundation, that plans to ensure space travel gets accessible for many. These can then serve as ports of call for missions to moon, mars and elsewhere. ‘Field trips’ will also be planned from the space hotel.

As per business intelligence shared by the Belgian Statistical Office, tourism is doing very well in the country. Both the Walloon as well as the Flemish region have seen steady growth in room booking numbers at 5 and 7 percent respectively. But the highest growth has been clocked at Brussels, with double digit figures at 10 percent. Both business travelers as well as leisure tourists are common in Brussels. But it is the latter that is causing the main hike, as the former was already a substantial presence. Among inbound travelers, those from France and the USA make up the highest numbers, but it has also been boosted by tourists form India, Taiwan and Japan. The biggest advantage the city has as yet, is that is isn’t a mass popular destination like say Paris or Barcelona.
