MANAGING in the

NEW WORLD

There are times, when entrepreneurs face this situation of actually giving up, with no hope left. The business is probably not doing well or showing any signs of encouragement. At these times, it is pertinent to ask oneself some critical questions to try and resolve the situation. The first such question must be whether it is the time to actually give up or simply change track by transforming the business into a different model. It is probably time to be creative and try some business innovation from the learning out of the myriad failures. He/she must also assess whether the situation one is in, is intentional or due a combination of several causes. Giving up must not be the prerogative of the entrepreneur alone, but he/she must consult the rest of the team too, as they have also invested time and effort into the project. One needs to gauge how far is the work from the intended target. Finally, the entrepreneur must learn to separate oneself from the business. Personal performance must not be mixed with business results. This is a problem several startups face.

While each professional may have a detailed job description attached post the recruitment, in the present day, performing that alone may not be sufficient. It may enable staying at the job, but to rise higher up in the hierarchy one needs to take initiative and keep learning on the job to outperform competition. This may be termed as the “hidden curriculum of work”. This is all the more important because bosses appraise the work of their team members not based on a formal JD, but on their assessment of what the job holds. In order to do this, the employee must dig deeper to look beyond the narrow JD. One must understand what best describes his/her role the best, tasks that take up most of the time and obstacles preventing one from performing to optimum level. Beyond being confined to one’s own organization, the truly enterprising employee must look elsewhere for further inspiration. Business intelligence must be gauged from competitors or even other industries which could be feasibly implemented at the employer’s. Whatever work one does, it needs to be aligned with the bigger picture. This requires close collaboration with stakeholders to match up to constantly shifting challenges or priorities.

Asking a superior for a promotion can be one of the most challenging tasks for any professional. It is usually not a one-time thing, but involves a series of discussions and negotiations where one cannot lose one’s calm. A global executive coach has offered some insights on ways to do it. First of all, the employee must reflect on why he/she wants or deserves the promotion. Adequate research must be done beforehand to understand what could be the causes and strengths in one’s case. The case needs to be built in stages, preferably by use of business analytics to prove the effect had on the work. The timing to asking for promotion is crucial as moods play an important part in the decision. Instead of directly breaching the subject, it would be wise to slowly plant the seed in the minds of the decision makers. This seed subsequently has to be nurtured. While one needs to be patient and avoid recklessness, too much of the former will also not serve the purpose.

Davos in Switzerland remains the venue for the annual World Economic Forum assembly to discuss the most crucial of affairs related to cross-border business and economy. One of the major themes to emerge this year, is the overwhelming positivity surrounding growth, with fifty-seven percent affirming this was their belief. Two major threats to this growth story could be the worries surrounding cybersecurity and the financial risks due to high debt levels amidst high liquidity. Nationalist aspirations were in full view with India, UK, USA, Germany and Canada clear on where they stood. China’s Belt and Road Initiative could become a major driver for cross-border investments. There remain concerns about the future of the NAFTA (North American Free Trade Association). A massive restructuring of portfolios should soon emerge in fields such as telecom, energy pharma and banking. Social innovation will now be the need of the hour. Due to massive disruption caused by technology, corporate training programmes will now need to be geared towards reskilling of employees. The Davos summit also discussed the importance of the human capital, with talent recruitment now recognized as one of the key processes in capital allocation.
